I have been a YouTube lover for many years, but have never truly explored the tools available on YouTube. I tend to use YouTube more for recreational entertainment, as in something to make me laugh! I actually didn't even know you could make playlists until this assignment. Since making the playlists assigned I have made playlists for songs and for videos for my son to watch. He's a big Elmo fan, you know. :) I also made a playlist for myself titled Librarian, where I posted videos that gave me ideas for things to do in my own library next year. One librarian used students to make videos on how to find books in the fiction and nonfiction sections. I LOVE that idea!!! I would probably not have explored the YouTube world for ideas in the library if it weren't for this assignment.
I was surprised at the amount of helpful videos and tutorials I found for both Twitter and Wikis. I have used YouTube many times for helpful tutorials. I just don't think about it for having the tutorials on things like Twitter.
I remember last year my parents' pool started getting algae while they were out of town and I was house sitting. I watched a YouTube video on someone explaining their exact pool pump and how to fix it so the problem would stop. I didn't even have to make a service call because of YouTube.
This assignment inspired me to think of playlists for staff development with teachers and for assignments with students. I think this is a great way to learn at your own pace, and to be informed visually, through audio, and through demonstration. I need to keep YouTube in my bag of teaching tricks!
